Changes to Cisco telephone dialing

Following a telephone system upgrade in April, campus customers using Cisco phones may have noticed a change in the way their desk phones display outgoing calls. Since the upgrade, Cisco phones have displayed the full 10 digit number, including area code, for all calls leaving campus, even local calls. Previously, a customer who dialed 459-3927 on their campus desk phone, could expect the display to read 459-3927. Since the upgrade, the display will now read 702-459-3927, regardless of whether the customer dialed the 702 area code or not.

This is an expected result of an engineering change required to standardize call routing for campus customers and to bring UNLV into compliance with carrier routing requirements. Major phone carriers have begun instituting ten digit dialing requirements in many large cities.

This change will not result in any additional long distance toll charges erroneously applied to local calls. Telecom has confirmed that UNLV’s carrier analyzes the origin and destination of each call at their rate center, and determines if a charge is necessary based on the destination connection.
