Telecommunications Tips: How to Order a Phone
The Telecom Department at UNLV has posted this site to inform you of their services and charges. We offer local and long distance calling far below market pricing, with voice mail, restricted calling and other features. When requesting telephone service please consider the following:
Making a connection hot (dial tone):
Each building is wired with the same basic wiring scheme, at least one voice and data jack in the room capable of connecting two voice and two data components. These jacks are wired to the IDF (Internal Distribution Frame), and are not normally connected to the phone system unless requested. Each instrument, analog, digital phone, modem, and or fax requires a connection to the main telephone switch.
Labor rates:
Our telecommunications technicians are subcontracted and the current labor rate to make the connections, install, move or change equipment is $70.00 per hour. The minimum charge is ¼ hr. and the max charge is 2 hrs. per phone. Most repairs are inclusive in the contract and are performed by our onsite technician at no charge.
Requesting service:
These services can be ordered with an IDR (Internal Department Requisition) sent to mail stop 1036 with an authorized signature associated with the account number used. For most cases program changes like CPND (calling party name display), features, voice mail, toll restrictions, and speed dial, are free but we do request an for the authorization of the changes.
